Serious Injuries for Newark Police Officer Struck by Vehicle in East Ward

A Newark Police Officer is in a hospital fighting for his life this morning after being struck by a vehicle in the city's East Ward early this morning.

EMS rushed the officer to University Hospital at around 3:30 a.m. suffering a serious head injury after being struck by a vehicle in the 100 block of Foundry Street according to authorities.

In a statement released from Newark Police Director Anthony Ambrose (who visited the injured officer at the hospital), Ambrose said "Newark Police officer was struck by a car on Foundry and Ronoake Streets in the city"

According to Ambrose, at around 3:30 am, the 37-year-old, 14 year veteran was issuing a summons to a vehicle when he was struck and dragged.

He was taken to an area hospital where he is being treated for serious injures and is expected to survive Ambrose said.

The crash investigation is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutors Office Crash Unit along with the Newark Police Dept.

The investigation is on going.

It is not immediately clear if an arrest was made.
