Reward Offered in 2015 Fatal Hit-and-Run in Somerset County

Officials stated that investigators continue to seek information into the death of George Kavanaugh, 75, a former Somerville Fire Department Chief, who was struck and killed by a vehicle while standing outside of the Lincoln Hose Fire Company 4 firehouse on March 6, 2015 

Prosecutor Robertson stated that the investigation yielded that on March 6, 2015 Chief Kavanaugh after attending a viewing for a fallen firefighter went to the firehouse.  

Officials say at approximately 9:25 p.m. while waiting for a ride outside of the firehouse Chief Kavanaugh was struck by a vehicle that sped off from the scene.

 According to an eyewitness account, a light-colored SUV had been idling and parked in the area of the front bay near the firehouse door minutes before backing up and striking Chief Kavanaugh.

 

Prosecutor Robertson and Sheriff Russo stated that a reward of up to $15,000 is being offered for the identification, arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the hit-and-run fatality of Chief Kavanaugh.  The reward is being offered by Somerset County Crime Stoppers (up to $10,000) and the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office (up to $5,000).
