Early morning police activity in a neighborhood in the city's South Ward had officers at a house investigating reports of trespassing.
Residents in the 40's block of Van Ness Place contacted police after they observed several people enter a house that was boarded up and ordered shut down by Newark City Officials on Friday.
Several police officers set up a perimeter around 46-48 Van Ness shortly before 4:30 where officers found occupants-residents inside who apparently did not know that the house was shut down by authorities although there was no electricity inside the building according to reports.
City officials say they closed the illegal rooming house after they found deplorable conditions inside the residence, including faulty electrical wiring, illegal plumbing and gas lines, non-working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well as unlawful bedrooms and cooking areas in the basement.
There were no arrests reported in the overnight incident.
