Residents: Blind Man Killed in Jersey City Fire

According to several building residents, the man killed yesterday in a one-alarm fire has been identified as a 60-year-old blind man.

Firefighters responded to the seven-story Journal Square senior building – located on the corner of Sip Avenue and Enos Place - shortly after 4 p.m., after the building's security saw the smoke filled apartment.

The fire which appears to have been the result of a cooking accident, was contained to Stewart Sheff's fifth floor apartment. However, according to Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill, Sheff died before the firefighters' arrival.

No other injuries were reported.The building residents were allowed back into the building approximately 20 minutes later.
