Kasim McDonald, 26, of Montclair, was arrested Tuesday after police reportedly found him in possession of a weapon following reports of shots fired in Newark.
According to police, at approximately 9:55 p.m., officers near the intersection of Clinton and Johnson avenues heard multiple gunshots coming from the area of Avon Avenue and Irvine Turner Boulevard. No one was injured in this incident, police added.
Witnesses reported that a male driving a white vehicle was involved in the weapon discharge. Officers observed the vehicle, driven by McDonald, and conducted a motor vehicle stop.
Detectives investigating the shooting obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and recovered an illegal handgun. Police arrested McDonald and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession.
These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
