Remembering Nino: The Man Behind the Pizza; a Heart of Gold for Harrison Community

Harrison Town Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Today, we honor the life of a truly remarkable man, Antonino D’Angelo, affectionately known as Nino—a man whose warmth, generosity, and deep love for his community left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Nino, the heart and soul behind Nino’s Pizzeria in Harrison, NJ, passed away on Sunday morning, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and dedication to helping others.

His passing has left a deep void, not just for his family, but for the many friends, neighbors, and patrons who were fortunate enough to experience his generosity.

A Friend to All, A Heart for Many

Walking into Nino’s Pizzeria was more than just stepping into a restaurant—it was stepping into a place where you felt at home.

Whether you were a regular, a first-time visitor, or someone in need, Nino welcomed you with open arms and a big smile.

For me, he always greeted me as “Rich Man” before diving into conversations about life, business, family, or whatever was happening that day.

His love for people was genuine, his spirit infectious—he made everyone feel important.

To Nino, giving wasn’t something to think about; it was just what he did. His generosity reached across Harrison, Kearny, Newark, Belleville, and beyond.

Whether it was a local fundraiser, a struggling family, or a nonprofit in need of support, he gave without hesitation.

His contributions to Help 2 Feed, a Newark-based nonprofit that has been feeding the homeless every week for nine years, were just one example of his selfless nature.

According to the organization’s leaders, Nino was the first person to step up and offer support.

“A humble man who came from Italy and became a proud American and is an icon in the Town of Harrison. Mr. Nino was a big part of our community. A hard-working man and extremely generous to the core,” one community member shared.

A Journey of Hard Work and Passion

Nino’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a strong love for food and people. Born in Italy, he arrived in the United States at 13 in 1963.

He first worked as a butcher before venturing into the pizza business with his family member, Santo D’Angelo, in Sunnyside, Queens, around 1968.

In 1980, Nino opened Mr. Bruno’s in Harrison Plaza, later renaming it Mr. Nino’s in 1988, where it remained a staple until 2023.

For 44 years, his pizzeria was more than just a place to grab a slice—it was a gathering spot, a safe haven, and a cornerstone of the lower Hudson County community.

His hearty Sicilian slice was, in my opinion, unmatched.

Stepping into his restaurant, you never knew who you’d run into—mayors, governors, congressmen, teachers, police officers, firefighters, PSEG and NJ Transit workers. It was a hub for everyone, and Nino made sure that each person who walked through those doors -no matter the status- felt like family.

Behind the counter, just past the register, there was a special stash—a little treasure trove of treats.

Cakes, cookies, pies, and rare snacks -some-   from Italy—Nino would pull from this stash and offer it to those he considered his extended family.

And I was lucky enough to be a part of that family. He made me feel special, always making sure I tried something new and delicious.

A Legacy of Love and Generosity

If there was one thing Nino loved more than his restaurant, it was his family—especially his grandkids. He adored them, just as he adored his community.

No matter the cause, no matter the need, if it was for a good purpose, Nino was always there.

His generosity came without questions, without hesitation, and always with a smile.

Today, as we mourn the loss of this incredible man, we also celebrate his life.

Nino, you made this world a better place, not just with your pizza and Italian food, but with your heart, your kindness, and your genuine compassion for others.

There will never be another like you. We love you, Nino. And as I say goodbye, I do so not with sadness, but with gratitude—because knowing you was one of the greatest blessings of my life.

Your “Rich Man”  Richard L. Smith.
