A devastating fire in Newark’s West Ward left eight people from four families displaced Sunday evening, prompting the American Red Cross to provide temporary housing and essential assistance.

Firefighters were dispatched to 1088 18th Avenue around 5 p.m. after reports of a house fire.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy flames engulfing the wood-framed home, forcing them to stretch several hose lines to battle the blaze.

As flames threatened nearby structures, fire officials requested a second alarm for additional manpower.

Firefighters discovered the fire had spread to the basement, prompting an aggressive interior attack. After searching the home, crews confirmed that no residents were trapped inside.

It took about an hour to bring the fire under control.

The American Red Cross was on the scene, offering displaced families temporary housing, food, clothing, and personal necessities.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
