Newark

The American Red Cross was summoned to provide aid following a significant fire in Newark's Central Ward late Friday evening.

The blaze erupted around 11:15 p.m. at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Jacob Street.

Firefighters quickly responded to 485 Springfield Avenue, where they encountered intense flames emanating from the building's roof.

Efforts to control the fire became defensive as the situation intensified, prompting fire officials to issue a second alarm to summon additional resources.

Although the fire was largely contained by midnight, crews remained on-site into the early morning to address residual hot spots.

Fortunately, no severe injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
