My friends and family in the Newark and the North Jersey region are in for an intense heat wave that will begin today.

The weather forecast calls for caution and preparedness as we brace ourselves for soaring temperatures.

With the humidity levels at a stifling 82%, The National Weather Service said the air will feel heavy and oppressive. A relentless south wind blowing at 9 mph will contribute to the already sweltering conditions as the day progresses.

The barometer stands at 29.99 in, indicating high atmospheric pressure and clear skies.

According to NWS meteorologists,  we should expect mostly sunny and hot weather, with the mercury reaching a scorching high of nearly 100 degrees. However, the real challenge lies in the heat index values, projected to climb as high as 106.

NWS forecasters say the south wind, ranging from 8 to 17 mph, may provide a slight breeze but is unlikely to offer much relief from the sweltering heat.

As we head into the evening, the heat wave intensifies. The Newark and North Jersey region will be baking, with high humidity persisting through the night.

According to NWS meteorologists, an excessive heat warning will be in effect from noon onwards, indicating potentially life-threatening conditions for those vulnerable to heat.

This afternoon, NWS forecasters said there is a possibility of scattered strong thunderstorms. While they may offer temporary relief, it is essential to remain cautious as thunderstorms can bring their own set of hazards, including lightning and heavy downpours.

My Newark family and friends should stay patient because relief is on the horizon, but we will be waiting until Sunday as we will get a respite from the oppressive heat.
