A barrage of heavy gunfire ripped through a South Ward community housing The Newark Police Department's Headquarters overnight killing a man in Newark.
Police officers raced several hundred feet from the Police Headquarters to the intersection of Bergen Street and Clinton Ave. shortly before midnight where they were met by two women who were attempting to comfort a male victim who they found laying on the grown struggling to keep life in his body.
"Everything will be ok young man, everything will be ok, please keep talking to us" the women rapidly spoke to the victim.
Police immediately ordered EMS to the scene while securing the area that had officers locate a weapon near the victim's body. Residents on Chadwick and Madison told RLS Metro that the gunfire possibly began in their neighborhood after seeing a man running from the scene who appeared injured.
"There were so many gunshots that you couldn't count them. I just took cover, I've seen this before so, I knew what to do", a Chadwick Avenue resident said.
EMS rushed to the scene within minutes where they quickly lifted the bleeding male victim off of the ground and into the ambulance, then traveled the "straight path" down Bergen Street, only turning into the emergency department's entrance.
The male victim (only identified by family members who were rushing into the hospital as a 22-year-old) suffered injury from gunfire to the head according to officials.
Back at the shooting scene, police flooded the area around the police headquarters with police in an attempt to find the gunman/men responsible for the violent shooting, but came up empty handed as of 5:35 a.m. this morning.
Grieving family members and friends who were exiting University Hospital a little after 3 a.m., told an RLS Metro Breaking News reporter standing outside of the hospital on Bergen Street that the victim (who they identified by name) had expired a little before 2:30 a.m.
We are awaiting an official confirmation of fatality and the victim's identity from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
