In our pre-marital counseling, we were advised to forgive each other quickly. We were told that keeping count of each offense would be toxic for our marriage.
We did pretty well the first year or so of marriage.
But we soon were put to the test.
We found ourselves in a season of bickering and being easily agitated.
It all came to a halt when we said, in the tense moment, 'We need to pray.' As Christians, we knew that we needed to lead a life of prayer, but for some reason, our default wasn't prayer when it came to our disagreements in marriage or even how we ran our businesses.
That changed.
At that moment, we realized that we needed to turn from fighting each other to fighting together. We did that through prayer.
The craziest thing happened when we prayed. The atmosphere shifted. It changed from one of thick tension to a calming peace. It was a wild experience. We quickly saw how immature we were; although we may have had an issue, we knew there was a healthier way to solve it.
That moment in time has transformed how we disagree today. We've learned how powerful praying together is, even in the thick of the moment.
Here's why praying together is powerful:
- It takes the focus off of self and each other and places it on God.
- It shifts you both into a posture of humility simply because of God's Holiness.
- Transforms untamed anger into reasonable anger (if you remain angry).
- Convicts your heart of any misaligned thoughts that may not have been spoken but thinking it holds the same weight.
- It brings a supernatural peace that can never be conjured up or bought because it honors God.
- Invites the wisdom of God concerning misunderstandings in marriage and business.
These are only a few benefits of praying with your spouse. It is powerful. It doesn't have to be long and complicated. It can be simple and still powerful when the heart is in the right place.
Creating an atmosphere of oneness as marriedpreneurs starts with prayer for us. In fact, we include prayer in our daily legacy meetings, so it's part of the fabric of our collective lives.
