Police Shoot Male During Newark South Ward Investigation

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office were notified of a police-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in Newark's South Ward.NinosAccording to preliminary reports, the incident took place around 4:50 a.m. near Madison and South 18th Street.

During the course of an investigation, at least one officer discharged their weapon, striking a male suspect after an unspecified interaction.

The shooting activated a ShotSpotter device, alerting headquarters and prompting a significant police response to the neighborhood.

A weapon believed to belong to the suspect was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident, but three were taken to University Hospital as per protocol. 

As of 5 a.m., the condition of the individual struck has not been disclosed, and officials have not provided additional details.

He was conscious and alert while being transported to University Hospital. 

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
