NEWARK – With temperatures dropping and the potential for icy roads and snow accumulation, Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose is recommending staggered dismissals for downtown businesses and colleges this afternoon.
“We want to avoid the congestion that can make the afternoon commute frustrating and dangerous for drivers,” Ambrose said.
Director Ambrose said the Newark Police and the city’s Department of Public Works are ready for the storm, “but as always, weather is unpredictable,” he said.
“When the forecast says two inches, we prepare for two feet,” Director Ambrose said. “That’s why we need the cooperation of employers to make sure their workers can commute in an orderly and safe manner, and let us get on with our job of clearing the streets.”
Already, New Jersey government workers will be dismissed at noon. Newark Public Schools will close at 1 p.m., and the Newark City Hall and offices will close at 2 p.m.
Ambrose recommends businesses follow suit and begin sending people home between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
