Police Officer Shoots Attacking Dog in Newark's East Ward

Police in Newark are investigating a police-involved shooting this afternoon in Newark's East Ward. 

Preliminary information from the scene indicated that the officers were investigating in the area of South and Jefferson streets around 1 p.m. when a dog charged towards an officer and began biting the Newark cop. 

The officer fired shots at the dog, according to reports. 

Police set up a crime scene near the Pennington Court Housing Projects. 

Authorities have not confirmed the specifics behind the investigation and the officer did not suffer severe injuries.
