Hudson County authorities are investigating a shooting that involved a police officer in Harrison early this morning.
The incident happened in the area of South 7th Street and Jersey Street sending about a dozen police officers to the scene where they searched the area for the vehicle that sped away from the scene towards Harrison Avenue according to reports.
Exact details regarding the incident are developing, but according to preliminary reports, at least one police officer fired his weapon before 4:30 a.m. when a car occupied by two suspects reportedly dragged an officer during a traffic stop.
Residents on South 7th Street told RLS Metro Breaking News that they heard as many as three loud popping noises shortly before officers flooded the area, setting up the crime scene.
Police are looking for a black or dark colored car (possibly a Mercedes Benz) occupied by a white male and a white female.
The condition of the police officer is unknown at this time.
It is not clear if the officer's gunfire caused injuries to the suspects.
UPDATED: 12:05pm On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at approximately 4:20 a.m., a Harrison Police Officer made a motor vehicle stop in the area of Jersey and South 7th streets in Harrison.
The vehicle stopped and as the Officer initiated contact with the driver of the vehicle, the driver drove away, striking and injuring the Officer as he fled.
The Officer discharged his service weapon during the incident.
The injured Police Officer was taken by Emergency Medical Services to St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the Harrison Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.
No arrests have been made at this time.
