Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Winslow Police Chief Robert Stimelski reported police fatally shot an armed suspect in Winslow Sunday morning.
The shooting happened as a Winslow police officer responded around 10:20 a.m. to a domestic disturbance on the 300 block of New Brooklyn Road. It was reported a woman was being held at gunpoint by a relative.
Preliminary findings indicated that when the officer arrived a woman approached the officer's police vehicle and attempted to get inside while screaming about a man with a gun.
The officer then observed William Campbell, M/59, of Winslow, approaching the police vehicle while raising a handgun in the direction of the officer. The officer fired one shot, which fatally struck Campbell.
Campbell was dead at the scene and his firearm was recovered by police. The officer was not injured.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The officer is an 18-year veteran of the department. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. The officer's identity will not be released at this time.
When a municipal police officer uses deadly force, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office conducts an investigation into the incident, as required by the state Attorney General's Office guidelines.
