Newark police are investigating a shooting in the city’s West Ward on Thursday night that left one person injured.The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of 18th Avenue and South 17th Street.
A ShotSpotter device alerted officers to gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, police found shell casings but no immediate victims after canvassing the neighborhood, which is home to several churches.
While detectives worked the scene, University Hospital officials notified police that a gunshot victim had arrived at the emergency room seeking treatment.
The victim’s condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities believe the suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police have not released additional information as the investigation remains active and ongoing.Anyone with information is urged to contact Newark Police.
