Newark Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Wednesday evening within the Pennington Court housing complex in the Ironbound section of Newark.
Preliminary information indicated that the incident began developing around 5:10 p.m. after a ShotSpotter device alerted police to gunfire at 169 Pennington Street.
Reports said units arrived and cordoned off a section of the housing development upon discovering shell casings and blood at the scene.
A subsequent search revealed blood on a vehicle, although initially, no victims were located.
Residents at Pennington Court told RLS Media that it appeared that the altercation started inside one of the buildings before escalating outside with armed young males firing shots.
The investigation took a turn when detectives received information about a potential victim who had entered St. Michael's Medical Center on Central Avenue with a gunshot wound.
According to the investigation, following leads, police were directed to a house in the 100 block of Orchard Street, where they found further evidence of the crime scene.
It was reported that the juvenile victim first entered the apartment here before being transported to the hospital.
Reports say the victim was later transferred from St. Michael's to University Hospital for further medical care.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting, and as of now, no arrests have been reported.
