Police Investigate Phone Scam That Netted Over $3,000 From Linden Man

Linden

Linden Police are investigating a phone scam that netted over $3,000 from a Linden Man.

Police said a 35-year-old Linden man received a phone call from a woman identifying herself as “Barbara” of the U.S. Treasury on Monday evening.

The woman told him that he owed $3,800 in taxes to the U.S. government. The victim was instructed to purchase $3,800 in pre-paid cards and then call her and give her the serial numbers off the back of the cards.

Police said, after the man complied, he received a second call from another woman, identifying herself as “Kimberly Jones” who told him that he still owes an additional $9,000. At this point, the man grew suspicious of the call and notified police.

Officers advised the man that this is a common scam perpetrated by people impersonating government employees.
