Police Investigate Death of Infant in Newark's East Ward

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that Newark Police detectives are investigating the death of a 9-month old child who died in the City of Newark today.

Officials said shortly after 8:30 a.m., Newark Police responded to a report of sick or injured child in the area of Riverview Court.

The child was found unresponsive and was transported by EMS to University Hospital.

There were no signs of foul play nor visible signs of trauma to the child’s body.

Police said the child was pronounced shortly after arrival.

The Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is performing an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, although there is no evidence suggesting any suspicious activity.
