Police took the driver of a vehicle into custody after officers discovered a loaded weapon inside their car during a collision investigation in Newark's North Ward Saturday.
It happened around 6:35 a.m. at the intersection of Clifton and Park avenues.
The Newark Emergency Responders contingency rushed to the scene and found two severely damaged cars with at least one person trapped inside one of the vehicles.
Firefighters used the jaws life to extricate the male victim who reportedly appeared under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.
EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital in stable condition.
Police detained the suspect at the hospital after the gun was found in the car.
The crash is under investigation.
