Union County authorities are investigating a shooting that involved a police officer in Plainfield overnight.
According to a statement released by Plainfield Police, at approximately 9:50 p.m., police on patrol in the area of Stanley Place and West 4th Street, Plainfield Police Narcotics Detectives reportedly heard gunshots and responded to the area.
Police officials say upon officers' arrival, detectives were fired upon and exchanged gunfire with an adult male at that location.
According to police, no officers were struck by gunfire and neither was the suspect.
Police apprehended the suspect and a weapon was recovered at the scene officials said.
Police canvassing the scene found numerous shell casings.
Plainfield Police contacted The Union County Prosecutor's Office to lead the investigation.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
