Police Arrest Two Alleged Serial Burglary Suspects

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports the arrest of Nathaniel Hartwell 27, of Newark, for a series of burglaries that occurred between April 14th and 19th, 2017 and Ernest Reeder (right), 56, of Newark for burglaries that took place between April 16th and 23rd, 2017.

According to Director Ambrose, Newark Police detectives developed evidence that Nathaniel Hartwell is a suspect in six business burglaries that occurred at:

• Zap Car Wash, 1196 Broad St., on Friday, April 14, 2017, and Saturday, April 15, 2017

• Dr. Shack Chicken, 649 Market St., on Sunday, April 16, 2017

• Dollar Tree, 189 Springfield Avenue, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017

• Popeye’s, 857 Frelinghuysen Avenue, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017

• Burger King, 306 Elizabeth Avenue, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017

Director Ambrose said, police arrested Hartwell on April 21, 2017, and charged him with six counts of Burglary, five counts of Criminal Mischief, four counts of Theft and two counts of Possession of Burglary Tools.

Detectives also developed that Ernest Reeder is a suspect in six business burglaries at:

• Westrock Warehouse, 2013 McCarter Highway, on Sunday, April 16th, 2017

• JFC Motors, 508 Broadway on Wednesday, April 19th, Saturday, April 22nd and Monday, April 24th, 2017

• Roman Asphalt, 14 Ogden Street, on Thursday, April 20, 2017

• DCI Signs & Awnings, 110 Riverside Lane, on Sunday, April 23, 2017

Police arrested Reeder on April 24, 2017 and charged him with six counts of Burglary, one count of Receiving Stolen Property and one count of Possession of Burglary Tools.

Authoritites released Reeder from custody on April 26, 2017 Director Ambrose said.

These charges are merely accusations.

Both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

“I congratulate the members of the Newark Police Division who work extremely hard to identify suspects and then to gather the necessary evidence to arrest them,” Director Ambrose said. “It is unfortunate that after all their hard work, a suspect like Reeder is released two days after being arrested and is again free to resume burglarizing our residents and businesses.”
