Police Arrest Newark Man in Stolen SUV

Newark

Police apprehended a man after finding him in a stolen SUV authorities said.

Early this morning, members of the Special Enforcement Bureau observed a GMC Acedia running stops signs and speed through the intersection of Spruce and Quitman Streets.

Unit detectives attempted to stop the GMC to issue the driver traffic summonses, but he refused to stop. A license plate check revealed that the plate was registered to another car and was reported stolen in Pennsylvania according to police.

Police said, on South 11th Street between 15th and 16th Avenue, the driver and two occupants abandoned the SUV and fled on foot.

After a brief foot chase, the driver, 21-year-old Newark resident, Rasheed Bennett, was apprehended with the two other occupants managing to escape.

A subsequent check of the GMC determined it was also stolen out of Pennsylvania in a separate incident.

Bennett was charged with two counts of receiving stolen property, eluding and resisting arrest.

These are mere accusations lodged against Bennett. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
