Police Arrest Men in U-Haul Truck after Pursuit from Linden to Elizabeth

Two men who police said stole a U-Haul truck were taken into custody after a police chase that ended in Elizabeth.

According to authorities, on July 25th at approximately 10:26 p.m., police responded to a U-Haul business located at 1440 E. Edgar Road, for a report of two men breaking into a vehicle in the parking lot.

Arriving officers encountered the men sitting in the front seat of one of the rental trucks and ordered them to exit the vehicle at gunpoint authorities said.

Police said, instead, the men drove off, leading them on a pursuit northbound on Routes 1&9 into Elizabeth.

The vehicle became stuck in traffic at E. Jersey Street that's when patrol cars from Linden and Elizabeth surrounded the truck.

The men refused to come out of the vehicle but after several attempts to open the doors, they were eventually removed from the truck and placed under arrest.

Two Linden officers suffered hand injuries during the arrest.

Officers discovered a cash register on the front seat which had been taken from the business. Also recovered was a screwdriver and socket wrench police said.

The driver of the truck - later identified as Frank D. Hazeltine, 32, - was charged with eluding police, aggravated assault (two counts), burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, obstruction, resisting arrest, and possession of burglar tools.

The second suspect- later identified as Joseph E. Murphy, 41, who has addresses in Linden and Clark - was charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, obstruction, resisting arrest, and possession of burglar tools.

Both men are being held at the Union County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail pending a court appearance this week.
