Police Arrest Man Wanted for Paterson Shooting

Passaic County authorities announced the arrest of Mr.  Brandon Diaz, 21,  from Paterson, in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on March 14, 201, in the area of 20th Avenue and Jackson Street in Paterson. 

According to Passaic County officials, Diaz is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree; and Aggravated Assault, Fourth Degree relative to the March 14, 2021 incident.

Officials said that members of the Paterson Police Department responded to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey after a 21-year-old male Paterson resident arrived at the hospital seeking treatment for a non-fatal gunshot wound.

The ensuing investigation revealed that a gunman had accidentally shot the victim while they were both in a parked vehicle near 20th Avenue and Jackson Street in Paterson. 

Based on the investigation, police say Diaz was identified as the shooter, and on March 17, 2021, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On June 5, 2021, at 11:56 a.m., Mr. Diaz was arrested by the Elmwood Park Police Department after a motor vehicle stop in the area of Stefanic Avenue.

During the investigation, members of the Elmwood Park Police Department located a stolen 9 millimeter Taurus pistol loaded with hollow-point bullets inside the car. As a result, Brandon Diaz was charged on a Bergen County complaint with regard to the June 5, 2021 incident in Elmwood Park. 

According to Passaic County officials, Diaz is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree; and Aggravated Assault, Fourth Degree relative to the March 14, 2021 incident.

   The State filed a motion for pretrial detention that a Superior Court Judge will hear.
