Newark and the North Jersey region are waking to a frigid early morning at 4 a.m., with temperatures plunging below freezing and an enchanting inch of snow already blanketing the area. The snow, a beautiful sight as it clings to the landscape, is expected to continue falling until about 3 p.m., adding an additional 1-2 inches.
While the snowfall has largely accumulated on car tops and grassy surfaces in our Newark region, the freezing temperatures have rendered roads extremely slick, making driving conditions hazardous this morning.
In response, Newark Public Schools, along with Harrison, Irvington, Kearny, and several other regional schools, have announced a two-hour delayed opening for staff and students.
Some school districts, such as Jersey City, have opted to close for the day.
Today's forecast from the National Weather Service predicts a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain before noon, shifting to rain and snow likely between noon and 4 p.m., with a high near 34 degrees.
Wind chill values are expected to be between 20 and 25.
Tuesday night will see cloudy skies early on, followed by gradual clearing and a low of around 18 degrees. Wind chill values will hover between 10 and 15, with northwest winds of 10 to 14 mph.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 p.m., and temperatures are not expected to rise much past the freezing point.
These conditions suggest that dangerous roads will persist through both the morning and evening rush hours.
The region turns frigid late tonight, so residents are advised to be cautious if venturing out. Stay safe and warm as winter firmly asserts its presence in Newark and North Jersey.
