Linden police announced the arrest of a Piscataway woman accused of scamming a 76-year-old city man out of thousands of dollars.
The victim told police that the scam started back in May when he received a phone call from a woman, later identified as Mahwish N. Chaudry, 31, of Piscataway.
The woman told the victim that she was employed by a financial company and that his home was in foreclosure. She then told him that she could drive him to the bank to make a cash withdrawal and turn the money over to her to save his house.
The victim complied and gave Chaudry $4,000 cash.
Several days later, the woman called again and said they needed more money to avoid the house going into foreclosure. The woman was accompanied by a second woman, and both drove him to a local bank where he withdrew $5,000 and gave it to the women.
Eventually, the victim reported the incident to the police and after an investigation by Detective Kenneth Mikolajczyk, an arrest warrant was obtained for Chaudry.
She was arrested on September 25th and released on a summons pending a court date set for October 2nd.
Detectives state that this scam may be occurring in the Indian community and advised other victims to come forward and report any similar incidents to their local police department.
