Pedestrian Killed by Vehicle Overnight in Newark's South Ward

Authorities from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating a pedestrian strike that caused fatal injuries overnight in Newark.

According to authorities, the incident happened in the area of Elizabeth Avenue and West Peddie Street after 11:30 p.m. sending emergency responders to the scene where they found the seriously injured victim laying on the ground.

The victim was pronounced dead a short time later by medics.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members authorities said.

It is not immediately clear if the vehicle that struck the victim stayed at the scene.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is handling the investigation.
