NJ State Police officials are looking into a pedestrian strike that killed a person on the Nj Turnpike in Newark on Saturday morning.
According to a preliminary investigation, police were called to the southbound lanes near mile marker 106. 5 to investigate reports of a crash just before 1 a.m.
Units arrived at the scene and shut down one southbound lane of the highway when they found the severely injured unconscious and unresponsive victim.
Medical personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene according to authorities.
The driver of the vehicle reportedly stayed at the scene.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
**NJSP UPDATE 6:55 am**, "At 12:41am a pedestrian was struck in southbound lanes on NJ Turnpike in Newark by a 2011 Lexus SUV. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The left and center lanes were closed for two hours. The identity of the victim has not been confirmed at this time" -State Trooper Charles Marchan
