Pedestrian Killed on NJ Turnpike in Newark

NJ State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian strike that happened on the NJ Turnpike overnight in Newark.

The incident was reported on the southbound side of the NJ Turnpike near exit 15E at approximately 12:36 a.m. where police were called to the scene for an injured person.

Arriving units located the victim - only identified as a Jersey City man - who was pronounced dead at 1:18 a.m., according to police.

The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification to his next of kin.

Based on preliminary investigations, police determined that the victim, who was driving a 2013 Honda Accord was involved in a crash. For unknown reasons, he go out of his vehicle and attempted to cross the road, where he was struck by a 2016 Kia Forte.

No other injuries were immediately reported, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
