Essex County authorities are investigating a pedestrian strike that fatally injured a woman in downtown Newark on Monday morning.
According to preliminary reports, the incident happened at approximately 2:20 a.m. near the intersection of Market Street and NJ-21.
Police say a female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that stayed at the scene.
The impact of the collision caused severe injuries as EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital for treatment. The unidentified woman died from her injuries a short time later, according to police.
Police temporarily closed all lanes of NJ-21 for the investigation.
There were no other injuries reported.
