Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Newark's North Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray has announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a pedestrian was fatally injured after being struck by a motor vehicle in Newark, NJ earlier this evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:05 p.m. at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Mt. Prospect Avenue.

A 75 year old male was attempting to cross Bloomfield Avenue when he was struck by a 1997 Toyota that was travelling east on Bloomfield Avenue.

The victim, a Newark resident, was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit, who added that the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin.

The driver of the Toyota remained on the scene, according to Fennelly.

The investigation is being conducted by the Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
