Mercer County authorities are investigating a pedestrian strike that killed one person on a highway in Hopewell Township on Monday evening.
It happened at around 8:10 p.m. on I-295 near mile marker 74.6 where emergency responder rushed to the scene after receiving reports of two pedestrians struck by a car in the southbound lanes.
Units arrived at the scene and found an unconscious and unresponsive person suffering severe injuries at that location. That victim was pronounced dead a short time later according to police.
Police say a second person was rushed to an area hospital where doctors treated serious injuries.
The incident remains under investigation as police attempt to determine why the pair were on the highway.
There were no other injuries reported.
