The 24 Hours of Peace event, an annual outdoor concert in Newark designed to promote peace, experienced a brief disruption when police made at least one arrest following a physical altercation.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and South 10th Street after an expected large crowd gathered at the concert.
Despite the altercation and some unruly individuals taunting officers, police quickly intervened and restored calm. The event continued without further incident, and no serious injuries were reported.
This marks the first time the peace-promoting event has been held in Newark's Fairmount Heights section of the West Ward.
The 24 Hours of Peace initiative, sponsored by the Brick City Peace Collective and the Mayor's Office of Violence Prevention, aims to create a safe and vibrant community atmosphere.
Today (Saturday), the Urban League will host its annual Fairmount Heights Community Fair, an end-of-summer celebration extending the spirit of peace and unity.
Families can look forward to a variety of activities, including a petting zoo, pony rides, a mini train ride, bounce houses, and outdoor games.
The event will also feature sand art, face painting, and giant versions of Jenga and Connect Four.
Children will have the opportunity to receive back-to-school haircuts as part of the community-focused day.
The Urban League's initiative brings together residents of the West Ward and attendees from the 24 Hours of Peace event, continuing the celebration of peace and community engagement.
