Paterson Pays $50K Settlement in Police Shooting Case

Four years after a police-involved shooting that fatally wounded a city resident, the city agreed to pay $50,000 to settle the lawsuit.

According to authorities, police responded to the area of the BP Gas Station for a report of a dispute.

Upon arrival, Paterson Police Officer Javier Gutierrez claims saw Jacoby Hyatt with a gun and ordered him to show his hands. After Hyatt did not reportedly comply, the officer shot Hyatt in the back.

The case was presented to a grand jury, who did not indict Gutierrez.

According to officials, on Tuesday city council approved to settle the lawsuit filed by Michael Hyatt, the brother of the 39-year-old man who was shot and killed by in 2012.
