Paterson Man Charged in Connection with 2019 Shooting

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora announce that based upon an investigation conducted by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Alex Nieves, 22, from Paterson was arrested Friday in relation to a shooting investigation that took place December 5, 2019, in the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard Paterson.

Police say Nieves is charged with Attempted Murder, First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; and Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree.

In addition, police said, Mr. Nieves is charged with Possession of CDS, Third Degree; Possession of CDS with the Intent to Distribute, Third Degree; Possession CDS with the Intent to Distribute while within a 1000 feet of school property Third Degree; Possession CDS with the intent to distribute while within 500 feet of public property, Second Degree; and Resisting Arrest, Third Degree.

According to police, on December 5, 2019, at approximately 10:40 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard on a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, the police located evidence of a crime scene and a 28-year-old male Paterson resident who suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound.

The victim was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment. Based on the investigation Alex Nieves was identified as the shooter and an arrest warrant was issued.

Police said on Friday at approximately 7:55 p.m., Mr. Nieves was observed by members of the Paterson Police Department driving a motor vehicle in the area of Totowa Avenue.

Police attempted to stop Mr. Nieves, when he fled in the motor vehicle and crashed in the area of East Main Street. Mr. Nieves was subsequently stopped and found to have CDS in his possession.
