A man accused of a carjacking and assaulting two officers was arrested Sunday evening, police said.
Sunday shortly before 10 p.m., officers dressed in plainclothes were patrolling the area of Lyon Street when they spotted a group of males acting suspiciously.
One of the men in the group matched the description of a man wanted for an armed carjacking that occurred in the area of Jackson Street.
As the officers exited their vehicle and identified themselves, 18-year-old Eric Lewis (suspect) fled east on Lyon Street while two others from the group fled west on Lyon Street police said.
As the officers went after Lewis, they saw him throw a black handgun over a large fence into 198-208 Lyon Street.
Despite Lewis' struggle with the officers, he was taken into custody near Putnam and East 16th Street.
K-9 tracking dog responded and assisted with the recovery of a .40 caliber JCP High Point handgun, which Lewis reportedly tried to discard.
The carjacked victim positively identified Lewis as the carjacker and the stolen Mercedes was recovered by police.
Lewis was charged with carjacking, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, certain person restricted from possessing a firearm, two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer and resisting arrest by flight.
Lewis was remanded to Passaic County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail with no 10-percent option.
