Passenger Injured After Light Rail Train, Car Collision in Newark

The New Jersey Transit Police are investigating a collision between a Newark Light Rail train and a motor vehicle in downtown Newark on Thursday evening, according to information released by the agency.  

The incident occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. when a Newark Light Rail vehicle, which had departed Broad Street Station en route to Newark Penn Station, struck a car at the intersection of Broad Street and Orange Street. 

Officials stated that the motor vehicle was on the tracks after making an illegal right turn.

Emergency responders transported the car’s driver and one of the five passengers on board the light rail to the hospital with minor injuries.  

As of late Thursday, transit officials confirmed that tracks had been cleared and light rail service had resumed. 

The New Jersey Transit Police are leading the ongoing investigation.
