Over Nine Pounds of Cocaine Mailed to Newark Post Office: Two in Custody

According to authorities, two men are facing drug-trafficking charges after a package - with over 9 pounds of cocaine - was being mailed to Essex County from Puerto Rico.

The suspects, later debriefed as Vladimir Karilen and Jose Flores Maldonado were both charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine under a criminal complaint filed.

On Wednesday, a woman arrived at the Newark post office looking for the package. The woman allegedly contacted Karilen to pick up the package at an unspecified Newark address, where he was eventually arrested.

Inside the car that Maldonado was waiting in, led police to discover $2,062 in cash, multiple cellphones and a ledger of apparent drug transactions.

Both men as expected to appear before Magistrate Judge Leda D. Wettre Thursday.

They were both released after posting $100,000 unsecured appearance bonds, according to court records.
