New Jersey State Police officials are looking into a pedestrian strike that killed a person and injured another on a highway in Newark Saturday.
According to a statement released from NJ State Police, the crash occurred this morning at 2:23 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-78 in Newark.
State Police officials said preliminary information indicated that in the area of milepost 55.2, two pedestrians were pushing a disabled Chevrolet Cavalier in the left lane when they were struck by a Lexus SUV.
According to NJ State Police, both pedestrians sustained severe injuries and were transported to University Hospital in Newark.
One of the unidentified victims was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other individual remains in serious condition.
Police closed the two right lanes of I-78 for 4 hours while they investigated the cause of the crash.
