Essex County officials are investigating a surge in electronic thefts targeting Family First Benefits cards, with multiple residents—particularly from the Newark area—reporting that hundreds of dollars have been stolen from their accounts.

Essex County Spokesman Anthony Puglisi emphasized that this issue is not confined to the county but is a growing national concern.

"The theft of benefits from Family First Cards is becoming an increasingly widespread problem," Puglisi said.

To combat the rise in fraud, the Division of Family Assistance and Benefits is urging cardholders to take extra precautions to protect their funds.

Officials advise beneficiaries to keep their PINs private, update them frequently, monitor their balances regularly, and only make purchases at trusted establishments.

The county’s Fraud Unit has been overwhelmed with reports, responding to hundreds of cases each month. While investigators work to recover stolen benefits, victims are issued replacement cards.

However, a lack of federal funding has exacerbated the situation.

Puglisi noted that in December, the federal government did not approve funds to reimburse stolen benefits, leaving affected individuals unable to recover their lost money until the next monthly disbursement.

With cases mounting, officials continue to stress the importance of vigilance in safeguarding benefits.

Anyone who believes their account has been compromised is urged to report the theft immediately in hopes of preventing further financial losses.
