Authorities in Newark are investigating whether a domestic violence incident led to an early morning apartment fire in the city’s North Ward on Sunday.

According to fire officials, the blaze broke out around 2:25 a.m. in the 100 block of Clifton Avenue.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a fire inside an apartment.

Upon arrival, crews found evidence suggesting the fire had been intentionally set.

Preliminary reports indicate that the apartment owner, who was allegedly involved in a domestic altercation prior to the incident, may have started the fire.

Newark Police responded to the scene to investigate the possible domestic violence component of the case. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

The incident remains under active investigation by both the Newark Fire and Police departments.

Authorities have not yet confirmed if charges will be filed.
