Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Authorities in Essex County are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred inside a house in the Fairmont section of Newark.

Nino The incident happened sometime before 8:45 a.m., as officers from the Essex County Sheriff's Department were executing an arrest warrant in the 100 block of Camden Street.

The operation targeted a 22-year-old man, who reportedly barricaded himself inside the home upon the arrival of law enforcement.

According to reports, as officers entered the house, they initially employed nonlethal methods, including pepper spray and rubber bullets, in an attempt to subdue the suspect.

However, the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly charged at the officers, prompting them to discharge their service weapons.

The suspect was injured in the shooting and was transported to University Hospital, where he is reported to be in serious but stable condition.

Following the incident, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was promptly notified but has not released a formal statement.

Officials did not immediately confirm the involvement of any other police agencies in the incident or identify which agency discharged their weapon.

Further details about the incident remain under tight scrutiny as the investigation continues.
