Police officials in Newark announced the arrest of two juveniles after they were spotted by the department’s police helicopter driving stolen cars on Saturday night.
Officials said in a statement that officers in the helicopter, NPD1, saw two vehicles – a Honda Accord, stolen from Newark and a Nissan Altima, stolen out of Jersey City – driving erratically around 8:14 p.m. in the area of Bergen Street and South Orange Avenue.
According to police officials, NPD1 advised officers in marked police units on the ground that the juveniles, who were driving the cars, abandoned the vehicles on Broome Street and tried to blend into the crowd.
Officers from NPD1 followed the suspects from the air, giving directions to officers on the ground where the pair was headed on foot.
Moments later, officers were able to locate the suspects and arrest them a few blocks away, at Montgomery and Barclay streets.
“I commend the work of our officers from NPD1 working as a team with officers on the ground, a collaboration that led to the arrest of these juveniles and recovery of two stolen automobiles,’’ Director Ambrose said.
