Police officials in Newark are reporting that Newark Police Division’s Aviation Unit assisted members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit in the arrest of two suspects operating a stolen vehicle wanted in connection with a shooting incident in the City of Newark.
Police said on Saturday, members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit were assigned to specific areas of the City of Newark for a crime suppression detail.
When in the area of Quitman Street and Muhammad Ali Avenue, a stolen white two-door Chevrolet Camaro was observed traveling at a high rate of speed through the intersection.
According to police, the vehicle was stolen from a neighboring jurisdiction. It was also a vehicle that was sought in connection with a shooting incident within the City of Newark that occurred on Friday, January 21, 2022.
The detectives attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop, but the Chevrolet Camaro refused to stop and continued traveling at a high rate of speed.
Newark Police Division’s Aviation Unit monitored the vehicle’s activities from the air while communicating with the Criminal Intelligence Unit regarding the Chevrolet Camaro’s direction of travel.
The pursuit continued onto the Garden State Parkway and into the Township of Irvington.
When in Irvington, the occupants of the stolen auto exited and attempted to flee on foot.
Police said one adult male, later identified as Mr. Marcus Hyles, and one juvenile male, 17 years of age, were successfully apprehended without incident or injury.
Both individuals were charged with Receiving Stolen Property and Resisting Arrest.
The juvenile also had an outstanding arrest warrant from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department on an unrelated matter.
These charges are merely accusations.
These suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
