In response to a rock slide triggered by a major rainstorm in the early morning of December 11, North Bergen Township is urging Hudson County to conduct an independent engineering and geological review.
According to a statement released by North Bergen officials, this review will focus on the cliffs along John F. Kennedy Boulevard East and River Road, stretching from Weehawken to North Bergen, to assess potential risks and enhance safety measures for residents and properties below.
Local emergency services reacted promptly on Monday morning when reports emerged of a rock slide damaging several cars behind the Dutchess Apartment building at 7601 River Road.
After an on-site evaluation by engineers from the Township, Hudson County, and the property owner, it was determined that natural factors, including heavy rain, long-term roots, and vegetation growth into the rock formations, caused the incident.
The North Bergen Planning Board typically requires protective netting and fencing for development projects impacting the cliff.
However, this was not mandated for the Dutchess project as it did not involve direct interaction with the cliff. In light of this incident, the Township is considering a new ordinance to require protective netting for all future projects below the cliff, which is set to be discussed in an upcoming Commission meeting.
Mayor Sacco expressed relief that no injuries occurred due to the rock slide. He emphasized the importance of proactive steps to prevent similar incidents, acknowledging that recent heavy rainfall was not isolated.
The Duchess property has engaged a company to clear the debris, a process that may take several days due to safety precautions.
Meanwhile, John F. Kennedy Boulevard between 74th and 78th Street remains closed by the North Bergen Police Department until the investigation and cleanup are complete.
