North Bergen continued its longstanding Thanksgiving tradition on Tuesday, distributing more than 5,000 free turkeys and pork shoulders to residents in need.Organized by North Bergen Community Assistance Relief Events and Support (NB C.A.R.E.S.), the event ensured families could enjoy a celebratory meal with all the trimmings.
Residents began lining up early outside the township’s Recreation Center, where they received their choice of a turkey or pernil along with bags containing Thanksgiving essentials like stuffing, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.
In addition to serving individual families, the Nicholas J. Sacco Foundation provided financial support to six local food pantries to help them meet increased demand during the holiday season.
The beneficiaries included Dvine Konektion Community Development Center, Gospel Tabernacle Assemblies of God, Holy Redeemer Church, Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation (PERC) Homeless Shelter, Saint Rocco’s Roman Catholic Church, and Woodcliff Community Reformed Church.
Homebound residents were also included in the effort, with the township delivering fully prepared hot meals to those unable to attend in person.
Mayor Nicholas Sacco, who greeted residents during the giveaway, was joined by Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Allen Pascual, Claudia Rodriguez, and Hudson County Commissioner Robert Baselice.
The North Bergen Health Department was on-site to offer free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations as part of the day’s community-focused efforts.
"This annual event reflects the spirit of our community, and I’m thankful to everyone who helped put this together," Mayor Sacco said. "We're proud to ensure everyone in North Bergen can enjoy a warm, home-cooked holiday meal."
The event was coordinated by NB C.A.R.E.S. leader Aimee Focaraccio and supported by several township departments, including Parks and Recreation, the North Bergen Police Department, and the North Bergen Housing Authority.
The initiative underscores North Bergen’s commitment to supporting its residents and fostering community bonds during the holiday season.
