Firefighters made fast work extinguishing a blaze that ignited inside a house in Newark's East Ward on Wednesday afternoon.
According to preliminary reports, the fast-moving fire erupted inside a basement of a two-story siding framed house located at the back end of Thomas Street - #100- and just inside NJ-21 at approximately 3:57 p.m.
Fast responding firefighters arrived to find occupants outside of the house that had smoke coming from the basement according to fire officials.
Crews were able to make their way inside the home and found what's believed to be a grease fire that began on a stove.
A search of the home for trapped and injured occupants returned negative according to fire officials.
The official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
