In an overwhelming success that stressed the power of community, Family Connections’ NJ4S-Essex program hosted a vibrant “Back 2 School Giveaway” on August 10, 2024, at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark.
I attended the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which brought together over 300 families and provided essential school supplies in a spirit of unity and support as the new academic year approached.
The giveaway was a treasure trove for students and parents alike, offering bookbags, school supplies, uniform gift cards, socks, and undergarments. Excitement filled the air as attendees eagerly participated in raffles, with prizes ranging from college supply baskets to lunch boxes and more.
Beyond the material support, the event was a gateway for families to learn more about NJ4S-Essex and the array of programs it offers to schools throughout Essex County.
Adding a touch of health and wellness, Kindersmile was present to share crucial dental care tips, guiding children and parents on proper brushing and flossing techniques—a thoughtful addition to the day’s offerings.
Community feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one parent reflecting on the event, saying, “The engagement with the staff was wonderful. I truly appreciated their interaction with all of my children. We had a great time, especially enjoying the family engagement section.
The raffles were a very nice touch!”
Diane Travers, Director of NJ4S-Essex, expressed her gratitude and pride in the team’s efforts:
“The NJ4S-Essex team worked tirelessly to create a meaningful day for our families in Essex County. Seeing several hundred parents, caregivers, and students come together to enjoy games, dancing, snacks, and leave with much-needed school supplies was incredibly rewarding.”
The success of the “Back 2 School Giveaway” served as a testament to NJ4S-Essex’s dedication to supporting the community and enhancing the well-being of local students and families.
As the new school year begins, the program continues to stand as a pillar of support, ensuring that every child is prepared to succeed.
